The Defenition of Natural Health and Healing, Naturopathy and CAM
Natural health and healing are broad terms that refer to alternative medicine, complementary medicine, holistic medicine and holistic health and can also be referred to as Naturopathy.
Natural health and healing usually refers to using the mind, body and spirit (or soul) in order to heal or enhance healing and health. Complementary and alternative medicine (CAM) utilizes many concepts and practices, so does holistic medicine. All these fields are intertwined so I will not confuse you and waste time defining differences.
What matters here is that all of these concepts and practices can be used alongside conventional (modern) medicine and research to better heal people and create a state of well being.
Healing the whole human, or reaching a state of well being involves much more than treatment with medicine or surgery and requires being well (being whole) in all eight dimensions of wellness. Seeking optimal wellness is an integral part of ones journey seeking wholeness.
Naturopathy is one of many CAM (complementary and alternative medicines) that are discussed in this blog, it emphasizes the body’s inherent ability to heal and maintain itself. Naturopathic practitioners emphasize a holistic approach to patient care.
Naturopathy simply put is a system or method of treating disease that employs no surgery or synthetic drugs but uses special diets, herbs, vitamins, massage, heat, etc., to assist the natural healing processes.
“pathy” stands for a “system of treating a disease”. Naturopathy is made of Nature + O + Pathy, it uses nature to treat disease.
Naturopaths aim at recognizing, respecting and promoting the self-healing power of nature inherent in each individual human being. They also identify and remove the causes of illness, rather than eliminate or suppress symptoms. They also emphasize the condition of health to promote well-being and to prevent diseases for the individual, each community and our world.
As you can see, Naturopathy promotes wellness in all eight dimensions of wellness, so does many of the CAMs.
Naturopaths use many treatment modalities such as these: Acupuncture and oriental medicine, botanical medicine, homeopathy, nutrition, physical medicine, nature cure, psychological counseling, color therapy, iridology, applied kinesiology, public health measures and hygiene, and reflexology.
Like any [if not all] CAM, Naturopathy is viewed by some with skepticism. However, a larger body of evidence is accumulating showing the effectiveness and safety of many of the CAM practices.
In future articles I will discuss many complementary and alternative medicine practices, I will also discuss evidence and research, delve into physical wellness along with mind and soul. Much more to come, stay tuned.
