What is Wellness & What are the Dimensions of Wellness?

Wellness doesn’t mean not being sick. Wellness is a dynamic process of change and growth. There are many recognized and interrelated dimensions of wellness such as: Physical, Social, Emotional, Spiritual, Occupational, Intellectual, and Environmental. All the dimension are crucial to the pursuit of wellness.

Wellness refers to a healthy balance of the mind, body and spirit. Wellness results in an overall feeling of well-being. To pursue wholeness you have to pursue wellness.

In the west, wellness has been used in the context of alternative medicine and holistic healing since Halbert L. Dunn, M.D. began using the phrase “high level wellness” in the fifties, based on lectures at a Unitarian Universalist Church in Arlington, Virginia, U.S.A.

Blood Test Results - Sept 2008

I had mentioned that my doctor ran a (number of) blood tests after my first visit to the hospital complaining about the back & neck pains and constant headaches and fatigue, basically I was falling apart and becoming dysfunctional.

Controlling the Movement of PEC and the Sternum

It is possible through breathing exercises and awareness to control the respiratory pattern of the PEC muscle.

Most people breath too quickly and not deeply enough, others who breath deep into the abdomen are not getting enough air to the upper lungs. I’m the later. At my last physical therapy meetings, the physical therapist said I should breath to the sides of my lungs instead of breathing deep into my abdomen.

With a little concentration it is possible to fill your lungs, feel the sides expand outwards, while not pushing the sternum outwards as the lungs fill.

PEC (or PECs) stands for Pectoralis major muscle.

The Pecs is a thick, fan-shaped muscle, situated at the upper front (anterior) of the chest wall.
It makes up the bulk of the chest muscles in the male and lies under the breast in the female.

The more frequent variations include greater or less extent of attachment to the ribs and sternum, varying size of the abdominal part or its absence, greater or less extent of separation of sternocostal and clavicular parts, fusion of clavicular part with deltoid, and decussation in front of the sternum.

Who Am I & Who Are You, For Real Now

A question that humans pondered and struggled with for ever; this may be “the” question to ask, the one question that everybody asked themselves at least a hundred times, and what is [should be] the ultimate holy grail for everyone.

Are we made in God’s image, are we souls in physical bodies, are we actually non-physical and live in a virtual universe where everything that we see is a hologram, are we a dream in the mind of a God, are we physical biological entities with no souls, did we evolve on Earth, are we the production of an advanced alien race? … and the questions will go on for ever; so will the answers you will find.

Does anyone really know?

I certainly asked myself this question a few thousand times. In my quest for an answer I studied extensively the following religions: Judaism, Christianity, Islam and I studied to a lesser degree Hinduism, Scientology. I have also read on ‘natives’ beliefs, Buddhism, New Age, Atheism, Humanism and a few other philosophies.

Who Am I?

My Background

I was brought up in a family with a very long, ancient, Christian Orthodox lineage and heritage that descended from the region where Jesus, Moses and David came from. I was however raised as an Evangelical; in fact I was a strict Evangelical Christian for a good portion of my teenage years, yet I lived in a Muslim society where the Islamic believes were prominent. As a Christian I studied the bible well, read the new testament well over four times from cover to cover, and read through the old testament a lot.

Meanwhile I was fully immersed in the Muslim way of life. I even learned Islam and the Quran in school as it was mandatory, and studied the most famous and commonly used Sura’s (as part of my religion class for 5years in the public school system). By the way, I was an ‘A’ student and still have the transcripts. Since then, I have studied Catholicism, Judiasm, Hinduism, Wicca, Paganism, Scientology, Atheism, Humanism, Unitarian Universalism, and others.

As all the above unfolded, I could not help but question everything and to inject logical thinking into every story, teaching and concept I learned. This made my quest and research ‘interesting’ to say the least.

I always liked to join a culture, learn their way of thought, ask questions and observe, examine point of views from many sides, step back and think outside the box, and always be open minded, ultimately I reach conclusions based on my thought process and research; but these (thought process and research) never end, so this is a process that’s ongoing. I have had various conversations with Catholic, Jewish, Hindu, Wiccan, Agnostic and Athiest friends. I know the academic aspects of these belief systems, but perhaps more importantly I’ve seen how people ‘lived’ these religions daily, and I’ve seen how their thought processes worked and how they led their lives, and what they struggled with.

On top of that, I’ve read as much as I could on science, mostly physics, astronomy, medical research and news, also computer science, various philosophies, natives’ believes and teachings, and ancient cultures and their stories. As usual, I approached everything with a scientific view, critical, skeptical but with a never ending open mindedness. A true scientists is an open minded one.

I practiced meditation when I was a teenager, and since then on and off due to life events. But I’ve always been different, saw things from different angles, it may be due to my meditation as a teenager, exposure to different ideas, or perhaps due to my curious mind. I’ve always had a critical mind that wanted to find facts.

My Second Meeting with the Therapist

As explained in a previous post, my first meeting with the physical therapist inspired me and re-ignited the interest I’ve always had in the mind, body and soul connection. Based on this interest I decided to start this blog in order to share with you my notes, research and experiences. I then shared with you the lovely and familiar sensation (i.e. life force) that I experienced while practicing guided imagery with the aid of an audio CD called Relaxation & Wellness by Belleruth Naparstek last week.

Today, I had my second meeting with the physical therapist. I left the meeting with an arsenal of new techniques and lots of useful information that I will share with you in future blog articles.
